American Mahjong — Beginner Classes, Open Play & Private Events

There is always a seat at my table.

After 20+ years as a special education teacher, I traded the classroom for the American Mahjong table. I create fun, welcoming experiences that make learning and playing American Mahjong approachable for everyone — whether you're picking up your first tile or have been playing for years.

"My friends and I were saying on our way home after the second class that we can't think of how this class could have been any better."

How I Teach

Why Learn With Sue

I don't just teach the rules — I teach in a way that builds confidence. Every class is designed to meet you where you are.

A Curriculum That Adapts

I built my own curriculum and refine it based on what my students need. Differentiation is at the heart of how I teach.

Step-by-Step Visual Supports

I break the card, tiles, and rules into manageable steps with visuals that make them easier to absorb.

Hands-On Practice

We learn by doing, with activities that make the game feel accessible from the very first lesson.

"Hi, I'm Sue — the teacher turned mahjong instructor behind Mahj with Sue."

A year ago, I would have laughed if you'd told me I'd retire from teaching to teach mahjong full-time. But trading the classroom for the table felt like the natural next step. I never really stopped teaching.

When I'm not at the table, you'll find me reading, at the beach, playing golf, or with friends and family. I hope every Mahj with Sue gathering brings the same simple joys I love: connection, fresh air, and a little friendly competition.

Voices From the Table

"I tell everyone YOU MUST GO to Sue's and learn Mahjong!"

Linda H.

"This is great. I hope to continue. I love your energy and enthusiasm… and those beautiful tiles!!"

Diane B.

"A lot of thought went into these sessions. It completely exceeded my expectations."

Victoria B.
